Referees play a vital role in ensuring the success and fairness of all matches. Refereeing can be an exciting challenge for those interested in continuing to participate in soccer. YVYSO is always in need of referees and we encourage you to participate!

Step by Step Referee Requirements
STEP
1a
NEW REFEREES
All new referees will need to follow the steps as listed in the link below. All steps must be completed prior to the start of the season. If you have an existing Cal South profile, you may use this profile to register to become a referee. Otherwise, you will be required to create a new Cal South profile. You will also need to create a US Soccer profile. Within the Cal South checklist, you will need to complete all the training modules, attend a Referee Preparation Training (RPT) course (online or in-person), complete a background check (if over 18), and complete the SafeSport training course. Since referees are paid, these fees are not reimbursed by YVYSO. Payment for referee varies by game and division. All referees must be at least 13 years old.

RETURNING REFEREES
All returning referees will need to follow the steps as listed in the link below. All steps must be completed prior to the start of the season. If you have an existing Cal South profile, you may use this profile to register to become a referee. Otherwise, you will be required to create a new Cal South profile. You will also need to create a US Soccer profile if you don;t already have one. Within the Cal South checklist, you will need to complete all the training modules, complete a background check, and complete a SafeSport training course. Since referees are paid, these fees are not reimbursed by YVYSO. Payment for referee varies by game and division. All referees must be at least 13 years old.

COMPLETION
Once your referee license and all necessary requirements are completed, email the Director of Referees and inform them of the completion. Provide a copy of all your paperwork as an attachment. Once received, we will put you on the Active Referee list and will email you once the game schedules have been created.

PURCHASE GEAR
Once you become an active referee, you will need to purchase your gear! Below are two links to the various online stores you can use to purchase gear. You will need a yellow Official Referee jersey, dark shoes or cleats, black soccer or referee shorts, a set of Red/Yellow cards, whistle, wristwatch, and a pen/pencil.
